Rollei Users Group FAQ document
Frequently Asked/Answered questions on the Rollei Users List.
####################################################################### # # IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE ROLLEI LIST ARCHIVES ! # # This is an interim version of the Rollei Users Group/List FAQ. The # archives since the beginnig in May, 1996 up to Sep. 2004 have been # re-installed on-line, by courtesy of Brian Reid who had stored a # complete off-line backup and thanks to Ferdi Stutterheim who is now # providing the on-line web space. However the database of message # archive numbers has to be re-constructed. For the moment when the # actual message number is not indicated, you'll be sent to the month # e.g. "2003-11" when the discussion of interest and related thread # were made. So you'll have to perform some additional manual search # within the given index of threads to find the subjects and threads # you are looking for. Correct pointers to the discussions referenced # in the archive will be gradually re-installed in the future releases # of this FAQ. # Thanks for your patience ! # # Emmanuel Bigler # #######################################################################

Where is the Rollei Users Group mailing list ?
For 8 years (1996-2004), Marc James Small's Rollei Users List / Rollei Users Group has been hosted on a computer named : mejac.palo-alto.ca.us. The interface was named : majordomo software. 8 years is pretty close to a geological era in computer science ; meanwhile and after successfully crossing the Y2K barrier without much trouble, the Internet and related software has become more reliable, more user-friendly. No surprise that some day, an upgrade would be necessary for the Rollei Users List / Rollei Users Group. This upgrade took place as of January 2005, the new service managing the Rollei Users List is named : freelists.org. Rollei Users Group e-mail addresses and subscription procedures are as follows. In order to be able to post messages to the list, you need to register by providing a valid e-mail address. Through a web interface go to : http://www.freelists.org/list/rollei_list After you have registered (see below), simply e-mail your messages to : rollei_list at freelists dot org and your message will be mailed to all registered rollei_list users. The archives of the rollei_list are directly accessible here : http://www.freelists.org/archives/rollei_list For example, all messages dated February 2005 are here : http://www.freelists.org/archives/rollei_list/02-2005/ Please take good note that the proper list on freelists.org for which this FAQ is maintained is : rollei_list, the continuation of Marc James Small's 'mejac-majordomo' Rollei list. OK now assume that you are on http://www.freelists.org/list/rollei_list You'll see something like this : Rollei List # Name: Rollei List # Description: This is a list dedicated to the technical history of the evolution of the Rolleiflex camera from its original inception by Franke & Heidecke as a stereo camera in the 1920's to the medium-format and digital cameras produced today. The list emphasis is on the rapid development of lens and shutter designs spurred by the Rolleiflex cameras over the past eight decades and the impact these cameras are having today on the evolving technology of digital photography. # List Category: Arts/Media # Webpage: List administrator hasn't yet setup this list's webpage # List Archive: http://www.freelists.org/archives/rollei_list/ # RSS Feed: # List Type (help): Open discussion # Login directly to this list # Enter your email address:
A pop-up menu offers several options. If you are not yet a registered
RUG-ger, choose 'subscribe' after providing a valid e-mail address,

----------------------------------
For example, to the request : "get help" you'll receive the following
text message by mail :
TO GET A LIST OF LISTS:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "lists". A list of lists hosted by the server will be returned
to you.
TO SUBSCRIBE TO A LIST:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server (you can just
reply to this message). In the subject field, enter "subscribe
[listname]". Or, you can send a message to "[listname]-request"
with a subject of "subscribe".
TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM A LIST:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server (you can just
reply to this message). Enter "unsubscribe [listname]" in the
subject field. You can also send a message to
"[listname]-request" with a subject of "unsubscribe".
While you should NOT send your unsubscribe command to the list
itself, Ecartis will attempt to trap such erroneous postings and
forward them to the list administrators for proper handling.
TO GET A DIGEST EVERY DAY:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "set [listname] digest". This will turn on digests, and you
will receive a digest however often the server is configured to
send them.
TO STOP GETTING A DIGEST:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "unset [listname] digest". This will turn off digest mode, and
instead you will receive an eMail every time something is posted
to the list.
TO GET A DIGEST AND NORMAL POSTS:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "set [listname] digest2". This will activate digest mode with
normal posting. As each message is posted to the list it will be
sent to you, and you will receive a digest as well. This flag
should be used INSTEAD of digest, NOT IN ADDITION TO.
To stop receiving digests in addition to normal posts, send a
message to the ecartis account with a subject of "unset [listname]
digest2". You will go back to receiving normal posts.
TO FIND OUT WHO IS ON A LIST:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "who [listname]". You will receive a list of people subscribed
to the list who are not hidden. Admins will be able to see
everbody, including those hidden.
TO HIDE ON A LIST:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "set [listname] hidden". You will no longer appear on WHO
queries to the listserver. No one (except Admins) will know you
are subscribed to the list unless you post to it (in which case
those people on the list will know you posted if nothing else).
TO STOP HIDING ON A LIST:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "unset [listname] hidden". You will then show up on WHO
queries to the listserver.
TO GO ON VACATION:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "set [listname] vacation". You will remain subscribed to the
list but will not receive any eMail as long as this flag is set.
To come back from vacation, eMail the ecartis account with a
subject of "unset [listname] vacation".
TO CHECK ON YOUR OWN STATUS:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "stats [listname]". You will get a list of all the flags
currently set on your account.
TO GET A LIST OF FLAGS AVAILABLE:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "flags". An eMail will be sent to you with the available flags
that you can set on your account.
TO GET A LIST OF COMMANDS AVAILABLE:
Send a message to the ecartis account on the server with a subject
of "commands". An eMail will be sent to you with all the commands
that the server and any installed modules offer.
---
You may get all this information by sending requests as explained
above to the FreeLists Mailing List Manager ecartis at freelists dot org
You may also subscribe and un-subscribe 100% old-style 100% by e-mail
no-web - pure ASCII ;-) without the web interface by sending commands
in the "subject" line to
ecartis at freelists dot org, subject 'subscribe rollei_list'
or to
'rollei_list at freelists dot org' subject : 'subscribe'

If everything fails, you may go to the freelists help pages :
For now there's a FAQ at http://www.freelists.org/help/faq.html and full
documentation is available at http://www.freelists.org/help.
================================================================
So after this long preamble, welcome to our list and let us talk about
Rollei camera and products. In addition to the welcome message please
find here a document to help you to find useful information about the
discussion list itself as well as general information about Rollei
cameras. This document is mostly a collection of web pointers. Web
URLs can vanish any day without notice, so you'll find conventional
bibliographical references and a few detailed explanations.
There is another FAQ project, different in its spirit and complementary, under the form of a web page (for more information please e-mail Ed at edhoo, at hotmail.com or rolleifaq, at geocities.com) http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Village/3762/Rollei/index.html As of Feb. 2007, this FAQ does not seem active any longer, however it does contain useful information. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Linguistic foreword: we are an international group mostly speaking about German cameras, although the exchanges do take place in English. Group members frequently use various acronyms, abbreviations and trademarks explained below. The original German pronunciation for "Rollei" sounds like "Roll-eye" in English. Note about HTML code in messages: this is an "ASCII-only" discussion group: mostly 7-bit US-ASCII + international ISO extensions like ISO-8859-1 or ISO-8859-15. Do not be surprised if sometimes some 8-bit characters (e.g. German words in original spelling) or as of Jan. 2002 the new Euro currency sign do appear. By courtesy to other RUGgers that may have all varieties of mail reading software all over the world, you are kindly requested to switch-off any HTML code (although this HTML is, strictly speaking, 7-bit ASCII only) from your posts. This will also reduce the amount of redundant transferred data. If you need assistance to find the relevant "hidden software switch" you'll certainly find another RUGger with the same mailing system as you who will help you efficiently. Or check the following link: "Configuring Mail Clients to Send Plain ASCII Text ; What is wrong with sending HTML or MIME messages?" http://www.expita.com/nomime.html However please feel free to list WWW reference links like "http://www.rollei.de", since many mail reader systems will automatically transform the string into an active WWW link by detecting the "http://" header. Marc James Small has added here a special humorous comment for people who find unsubscription procedures to the RUG far too easy ;-);-);-) http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2002-06/00657.html -----------------------------------------------

3. Information available on the World Wide Web
3.1 Archives of the Rollei Users List / Rollei Users Group:
This archive is no longer maintained and its contents has been re-installed on-line thanks to Ferdi Stutterheim: http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives Those archives are not searchable... except when they'll eventually be indexed by companies who provide Internet search engines... As of July, 2007, the archive appears to have been partly to totally indexed by google. So you can use the following google request: site:http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives keyword-1 keyword-2 keyword-3 or site:http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives "keyword-1 keyword-2" keyword-3 with quotes if you want that the string "keyword-1 keyword-2" be looked for as a whole string. For example to extract messages relevant to the Rolleiflex T model: site:http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives "rolleiflex t" The long url of this google search is http://www.google.fr/search?hl=fr&q=site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fhomepage.mac.com%2Ffwstutterheim%2Frugarchives+%22rolleiflex+t%22&btnG=Recherche+Google&meta= The "rolleiflex t" request to the archive returns noting less than 1100 messages of interest! To get, for example, a list of messages related to the subject "rolleiflex planar vs xenotar" (probably the FAQ ;-);-), type the previous keywords in the "search" field. Keyword spelling is insensitive to case. Below is a list of useful keywords to look for, as an answer to frequently asked questions. Most often you'll have to refine your search (additional keyword, "Boolean" and/or search) to narrow down to a tractable number of messages. Clicking on one message shows the full text of the Rugger's contribution in the freelists archive format, i.e. you'll have immediate access to the related messages in the same thread.

Below is another list of photographic subjects outside the Rollei world, for which you may find good advice from expert Ruggers ; the keywords are self-explanatory, but you should combine with other keywords. On the freelist archive and as of Feb. 2007, for example "darkroom" will match not less that 450 messages ; the keyword "film" matches about 2700 messages but "film permanence" brings you to a very interesting discussion thread ; "filter" matches close to 700 messages, "orange filter" (28 matches) focuses on various issues with orange and B&W filters. keyword(s) search: related topic: depth of field depth of field issues DOF film slide "Hi, What is your favourite slide film here ?" negative darkroom enlarger -------------------------------- filter flash strobe -------------------------------- tripod case bag pixel "Hi, Do you think digital is the way to go?" scanner cold weather using a camera in cold weather conditions ---------------------------------------------------------------

3.2.1 web sites, general Rollei information
As of Sep. 2005 the Rollei brand name is now the property of Rollei GmbH, Berlin. The former Rollei factory in Braunschweig is now hosting Franke und Heidecke GmbH, a separate manufacturing company which not only continues the fabrication of camera and projector equipment, but also has other activities in fine mechanics and optics. Franke und Heidecke GmbH, Braunschweig, has of course some links and commercial agreements with Rollei GmbH Berlin, but the two companies are otherwise separate entities. Franke und Heidecke GmbH works on contract for several other companies including Sinar. Define the term 'Bokeh', a FAQ on all photographic discussion groups !!
"The shape of the out of focus area of a photo." (Peter Kotsinadelis)
Todd Belcher argues and explains the Japanese origin for this word:
(RUG, January 2004)
"I don't think that's the definition of Bokeh, Peter. Though that is
definitely an aspect of Bokeh. I think a definition of Bokeh would be
more along the lines of: the ability of a lens to render gradations. It
is considered good Bokeh when the gradations are smooth and poor Bokeh
when the gradations are harsh to the eye. The Harshness can be caused
by, as you say, out of round apertures, but can also be caused by the
lens itself. Symptoms of the latter are hard gradations and double
image out of focus areas.
Bokeh was coined by the Japanese and comes from the Japanese word for
gradation: 'bokashi'. The Japanese have, for many centuries, been
concerned with gradations in art, thus, it was not a big step to
consider it's implications in photography....
...
It is indeed related to Ukioye, Japanese woodblock printing, where
gradations were difficult to produce. The pressing of each sheet to
the woodblock had to have the ink wiped on to the woodblock 'just so'
to attain a nice gradation. In some areas, such as the face of a
character, very small areas may have had gradations and these required
a highly skilled printer to apply with consistency. The Japanese
prized the skill with which these gradations were made and effect they
had on the final image. these gradations made an appearance in
Japanese woodblock prints towards the end of the 1700s and early
1800s. --Todd Belcher"

The automatic roller-feeler film sensor on Rolleiflex models: a really frequently asked question. On 120/220 rollfilms, this system detects the beginning of the film by sensing the total thickness of the stacked (film) + (adhesive tape) + (paper). Then, after the sensor has been triggered, winding the crank will be stopped at frame 1 automatically. Do not forget upon loading that if you have such a model you should place the film paper leader between the two rollers (a small one, fixed, hidden beneath and the sensing one, bigger, visible), otherwise you might wind the film to the end without actuating the frame counter. The system triggers when sensing a 0.3mm total thickness and should not trigger for 0.15 mm only (reference: Prochnow, "Rollei Technical Report", see sec. 4.1.1). The sensor is reset together with the frame counter when opening the back to change film. Details on how this works by Jerry Lehrer http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2002-06/00465.html http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2002-06/00467.html
It was first introduced on the Rolleiflex Automat just before WWII and is present on all subsequent Rolleiflex models (and some SL66 film backs), with the following exceptions, which all use the simpler "red dot and arrow" manual alignment method: all Rolleicord models, Rolleimagic, Rolleiflex T, 2.8GX, 2.8FX. In such models, simply place the paper leader over the single roller and align the arrow on paper with the two red dots engraved nearby before closing the back. Another gearwheel sensor on the receiving spool (also present on the "twin-roller" R-TLRs) will then stop the crank on frame 1.
Read more about the origins of the system and why it was abandoned on the 2.8GX (selected posts from a long thread) http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2001-11/00603.html (M. S. "Baby" Rollei 4x4 TLR
This camera uses 127-size rollfilm only and delivers 38x38mm square images. No such a device as the classical "Rolleikin" was ever made to enable 135 film for use with the "Baby". 127 rollfilm has been discontinued by major film brands, however to serve the collector's and amateur needs, some companies continue to sell this kind of film in a very limited assortment. Ferdi Stutterheim's web site, RUG-posts by J.P. Dahlen and Bob Monaghan's web site give some hints on finding 127-size film: http://www.stutterheim.nl/rollei/text_pages/rolleiflex_userinfo.htm#film http://www.stutterheim.nl/rollei/text_pages/127film.htm http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2001-10/00964.html (J. R-35 battery issues :
A summary; for details see RUG posts and web sites below. This is valid for the built-in exposure meter, tessar and sonnar models. early R-35 tessar, as well as T and S models were originally fitted with a single 1.35V discontinued mercury cell type PX625. To replace this battery either you'll use a MRB625 1.35V zinc/air battery, or one 1.5 silver oxide cell of similar size, plus a voltage reducer down to 1.35V, or without voltage reducer you'll need to have the meter recalibrated. 1.5V alkaline cells are not recommended (voltage not constant during cell life). For battery installation in the R-35 see http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2003-04 (R. Chiasson)
late TE and SE models originally take a "quadruple" 5.6V discontinued mercury cell type PX27. This is easily replaced with the minox 8x11 adapter kit to fit 4x1.5 silver oxide S386 cells. The minox 8x11 kit has no built-in voltage reducer but no meter calibration is required, thanks to the internal regulated circuitry of the camera. Alkaline cells are not recommended either although less critical than for S/T "am-meter match-needle type" earlier T and S models. 3.2.5 Rollei-Voigtländer products
From 1972 to 1981, Voigtländer products were made by Rollei. Read more about what happened to the German camera industry at the beginning of the 1970's in the reference book "Zeiss-Ikon Compendium" by C.M. Barringer and M.S. Small (ISBN 1874707243, Hove Collector's books, 2-nd ed., 1999). Notes on the history of the Voigtländer company, posted on the RUG by M.S. Small, and related discussions: http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2001-10 http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2001-10 http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2001-11 http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2001-11
Note about spelling: like Rollei, Voigtländer is often misspelled: see http://homepage.mac.com/fwstutterheim/rugarchives/2001-10 The closest 7-bit ASCII rendition, approved by the family, is "Voigtlander". Some German-speaking users of the Internet will write "Voigtlaender", a common 7-bit transcription for German "umlaut" signs in e-mail exchanges. Voigtländer-labelled products made since 1981 have no connection with Rollei Fototechnic, Germany. Since 1997, the Voigtländer trademark is a property of Ringfoto GmbH & Co, Germany, and Voigtländer products are made under licence of this company. http://www.voigtlaender.de Rollei-Voigtländer products are described in Claus Prochnow's "Rollei Report" reference books, volumes 3 and 4 (see bibliography, section 4.1.1). ------------- SL35 "Voigtländer" Lenses by M.J.
